A commission from The New York Times about the draconian border control measures China are implementing during the pandemic.

I photographed Jessie Allen and her two daughters, Livia and Mae, at their temporary home in Cheddar, Somerset. The three of them have been unable to return to their home in Shanghai due to the strict rules in place. Jessie’s husband returned to Shanghai from Malaysia in Feb 2020 while Jesse and her daughters flew to the UK to wait out the pandemic. However, as the global situation has escalated, China has refused entry to foreign nationals.
