It’s been an insightful and throughly interesting weekend at the Magnum Professional Practice in London, which was a competition run in conjunction with Ideas Tap.Having the opportunity to listen to talks by the industry experts as well as the group portfolio review, proved an invaluable experience and has definitely reduced my ignorance concerning the business side as well provoking new thoughts, ideas and avenues to explore. Alongside this, I met lots of interesting and great photographers.
As there was an hour lunch break I decided to explore the local area, popping into a pub for a cup of tea(that’s not code). There was no one else in the pub so I sat at the bar and got chatting to Cyril, the barman. I found his story interesting, he’d come to London from rural Ireland looking for a job, working 2 jobs, 7 days a week including 4 night shifts at the pub with an infrequent sickie thrown in for sanity (sure it’s fine to write that). I also thought the interior was unusual, random decorations and soft toys. Not having my camera on me, I asked if I could come back the following lunchtime to take his portrait, to which he willingly obliged. I was worried I wouldn’t have time as the review ran into lunch(much in part to me being in the wrong group) so I ran round to the pub for 10 minutes.
